I have had nearly every cage under the sun to date, and at Mesozoic Rattery we primarily use the following;
- Savic Royal Suite XLs (Permanent Housing)
- Pet Planets (Permanent Housing)
- Alaska Hamster Cages (For Nursing Mothers & kittens up until they leave us)
- Pets at Home Hamster Cages (Typically for matings only)
For first-time homes I always recommend the Coco Large cage – it is big enough for 5-6 rats, can be placed on a stand and has good access from the top and front whilst still being affordable. They can often be grabbed secondhand for £30-40 which is always nice!
For a home wanting to expand the Savic Royal Suite 95 / XLs are my favourite, they seem to be more sturdy than the Little Zoo Venturer (which has been known to have bars snap) and be a little bit roomier than the Pet Planet.
The Pet Planet Rat & Ferret cage is ideal for homes wanting a budget option, but it has very shallow trays and no scatter guards like the Savics, so you will have to invest in a Perspex base or be forever sweeping up!
